The Tuna is one of the oldest, most recognised and most popular of Spanish traditions and it faithfully represents the country's culture and history. 1. Origin. 1. Origen.
Todiscover the true origins of the Tuna, although not in the sense in which we now know it, we have to go back to the very earliest university students in Spain. Para descubrir el verdadero origen de la Tuna, aunque no en el sentido en que lo conocemos ahora, tenemos que ir de nuevo a los estudiantes universitarios más tempranos en España. The first Spanish universities were established in Palencia(1184), Salamanca (1218), Valladolid, Lérida and Santiago de Compostela. The first university in Murcia was the Centro de Estudios Superiores (Centre of Higher Studies) which was founded in 1272 by Alfonso X, the learned king who lived in the city and whose heartis depicted on the coat of arms of Murcia. La primera universidad de Murcia fue el Centro de Estudios Superiores (Centro de Estudios Superiores), que fue fundada en 1272 por Alfonso X, el rey supo que vivía en la ciudad y cuyo corazón está representado en el escudo de armas de Murcia. The same Alfonso X, known as El Sabio (the wise king), referred to the sopistas in the Partidas (officialdocuments) describing them as scholars who played musical instruments as a means of supporting themselves. These students came to the university cities with scant economic resources andin order to survive and keep themselves they had to rely on their guile, talent and artistic skills. Estos estudiantes llegaron a las ciudades universitarias con pocos recursos económicos y con el fin de sobrevivir y mantenerse tenían que confiar en su astucia, talento y habilidades artísticas. They followed in the tradition of minstrels and troubadours from earlier ages and they also styledthemselves on actors and artists of the time. These poor students became known as sopistas as without enough money to feed themselves, they were forced to rely on the charity offered at monasteries and convents, where they were given sopa boba (the name of thesoup given to those who live off the charity of others). Estos estudiantes pobres se conocía como sopistas ya que sin el dinero suficiente para alimentarse, se vieron obligados a depender de la caridad que ofrece en los monasterios y conventos, donde se les dio sopa boba (el nombre de la sopa de atención a los que viven de la caridad de otros). There are many stories which depict these students ascharacters who lived by their wits, and inevitably this often led to clashes with local figures of authority. This was largely due to the hard times in which they lived and because they were known fortheir tendency for correr la tuna (living it up and having a good time).
