What Is The Main Clue For Crossing Barriers
Communication with people of other areas is truly challenging due to the culture which provides people with multiple ways of perceiving the world. If we are to deal effectively with people who are culturally different, it is important to become aware of our own culture and its impact on others because of a variety of aspects that differentiates usfrom others in terms of behavior, beliefs, stereotypes, folklore, and the one on which an especial emphasis will be placed throughout this essay: language.
We can adapt certain or the whole aspects of our culture to those of any area where we go without losing ours, but if you run into someone who speaks a different language, it is obvious that you are not going to understand any word, unless youspeak the language, which immediately creates an barrier that hinders communication. Currently, there are 6912 languages officially spoken all over the world, which means 6912 different cultures.
However, most of the areas where those are spoken have also adopted English or any other languages as their second, third or any “th” language (English or any other mass spoken language) for many reasons:travel, education, business, etc., thus bringing all the countries of the world together which allows us to have more universal languages, other than that of love. English is nowadays the hottest language, though third in the ranking of the most spoken languages after Chinese and Spanish, simply because of its constant presence everywhere, especially in websites and on TV which makes it into themost accessible language to learn.
So, the clue would be not only learning English or, at least, one of the most spoken languages (Chinese, French, Italian, etc.) but also, figuring out a way to learn them in order to demolish that barrier and get in contact with different people. Besides, thanks to modernization and technology, we can count on methods not only to learn any language in anaccessible way, but also to cross communicative barriers, without even going to different places. For the meantime let us take English as the clue, since it is the one accessible to everybody, and analyze its situation.
ENGLISH IN THE WORLD
If we take a look at the map (see on the next page), we will immediately realize how wide English has become, apart from being the first language in somecountries (first box), for example, as the second language (second box), as the first foreign language (third box) and also realize the places where it is not spoken as any of three of the previously mentioned ways; neither as a first language nor as a second or foreign one (fourth box).
Nowadays, English is considered one of the most important languages to learn because it is the one that trulylinks people from different areas without interfering with the value of their first languages. Though people do not really acquire a native-like accent, being understandable is what actually matters. Its importance is not only due to globalization, but also due to its position in the world. We can notice through the globe that English is spoken in almost 85% of the world, regardless of its conditionin the region. Wherever we go, English is there in any form.
INTERNET
As mentioned in the introduction, one of the multiple forms in which we can find English is on the Internet. Most of the websites are in English; though we can switch their language too, they are originally in English, except those whose links redirect to the website of the country we are located or belong to anon-English-speaking organization or company. Nevertheless, this essay will not discuss about visibility of language as a cyber-business tool, but as a learnable cyber-language to cross barriers.
Internet has been an allied when it comes to learning a language. Only few years ago, languages were used to be learned only by attending courses in an institute or at school. Although it is still the same nowadays...
