Women in India have had a very rough life and development in a cultural and social sense. They have gained rights and more privileges such as education, a job, and the right tovote to mention a few; although these changes are now present the transformation has been very slow and difficult. Before, and still now in some cases, women are still victims of society andstereotypes. In the movies Water, directed by Deepa Mehta, Slumdog Millionaire, by Danny Boyle, and the novel The God of Small Things, by Arundhati Roy, there is a clear view of three different females that, nomatter how much time difference do they have, share the same reality of oppression, discrimination, abuse, and specifically in the last one, the lack of self identity.
The God of Small Thingsdescribes a very dysfunctional family, and the events that made Ammu, the central female figure, a tense and repressed woman. The Novel revolves around Ammu’s niece Sophie Mol, and her vacations to Indiathat turned out to be her path to death in the river.
She was a mother and a father for her twins, Estha and Rahel. She was also a granddaughter, an ex-wife, a niece, and a sister. She was abused, notsexually, but verbally, and her lack of identity led her to be emotionally empty in some aspects, that ultimately led to her lover affair with Velutha. Velutha was an untouchable who worked for herfamily, but society’s rules and her own family’s despise for those who did not belong to a higher class, made it impossible for her to be with the man she loved. Sadly the only the moment when Ammu gotto see herself as Ammu and not as a mother, a daughter, a niece or a divorcee, was with Velutha and his rough, yet tender love.
She pulled his head down towards her and kissed his mouth. A cloudykiss. A kiss that demanded a kiss-back. He kissed her back. First cautiously. Then urgently. Slowly his arms came up behind her. He stroked her back. Very gently. She could feel the skin of his palms....
