Static Equilibrium Lab

Objective:
The goal of this experiment is to test whether the conditions of equilibrium are applicable to the behavior of this apparatus by predicting the scale readingand the necessary position of the heavier block, if arranged as shown below.

Material(Equipment):
A meter stick, hangers, and assortment of hanging blocks( in this case 100 gram discs), assortmentof hanging, spring scale, and a ring stand.

Questions:

Choose the meter stick as the object. Draw adiagram indicating the forces that are exerted on the meter stick by other objects, and where these forces are exerted.

2.)Devise a mathematical procedure to find the scalereading and the position of the heavier block when the ruler is in equilibrium. Use the procedure to calculate the reading.

Formula or mathematical procedure:

M1 X D1

= D2
M2List the sources of experimental uncertainties. Use the weakest link rule to determine quantitatively the uncertainties in your prediction. Write the values of the predicted scale reading withuncertainties.
Weakest link rule

The percent uncertainty in the calculated value of some quantity is at least as great as the greatest percentage uncertainty of the values used to make...
