Camilo Ponce Enriquez
Camilo Ponce was born in 1912 in Quito, Ecuador. He started out college in Quito and finished in Santiago, Chile in 1938. He graduated as a lawyer andlater attended the University of Southern California, where he received his doctorate. He proceeded to make a name for himself by being a founding member of many organizations. Such as in 1939, hewas one of the founding members and secretary of Frente Nacional pro-libertad del sufragio and in 1941, he was the a founding member of another group, the Union Nacional; the purpose of this group wasto help deal with the invasion of Peru. In 1943, he was the co-founder of Alianza Democrática Ecuatoriana. This group helped to unite the country to start a revolution to get rid of the president atthe time. They handed the power over to the minister of foreign affairs at the time, Dr. Velasco Ibarra. In 1945, he went to the United States of America to sign a United Nations document. A yearlater, he became the deputy of Pichincha and the vice president of the Constitutional Assembly. In 1949, he started a newspaper called the Union Catolica. Two years later in 1951, he founded theMovimiento Social Cristiano, which was conservative political party.
Ponce became the president in 1956. He was the first conservative president in 64 years. In his cabinet, he had people from both theconservative party and the liberal party; this helped him to be a well liked president. His term saw the end of great prosperity due to the banana boom. After WWII, the demand for bananas was huge andthe Caribbean and many countries in Central America were unable to produce due to such problems as crop disease so Ecuador became the number 1 exporter of bananas. Because of the prosperity, hefocused on public works quite a bit. Under him, many things were built or remodeled. 500 schools were created, public building were remodeled.
