A Tool For Interaccion
For this Essay I wanted to discuss the use of new technologies in art and Museums, on how museums make use of this technology to communicate and teach, but also research advantages of digital art and the way the process becomes more important than the product. I don’t want to focus in the use of traditional because Ipersonally think more often than not, these days, artists are blending the two mediums to create a hybrid of traditional and digital media, traditional methods nowadays is no longer by itself, being digital just an extension that complements traditional, even when it’s an interaction of the two I could say that digital technology is being used much more professionally. But, what it can really beconsidered digital art? I can understand by new media technology or digital art when includes artwork made mostly on a computer such as digital art, computer graphics, computer animation, virtual art, internet art, interactive art, etc. whereas traditional art as what most people think of as art. Drawing, painting, old fashioned darkroom photography, printmaking, lithography, sculpture and prettymuch anything else you do with your own two hands, to me is considered traditional art. Nowadays a computer can be considered indispensable in the everyday life, as well as many other devices, but, do we know how it works? I am not going to tell how a computer works internally because is not something I particularly have much knowledge on, but there is something I can say and helps me understanddigital art, a computer is a machine that processes and carries out mathematics algorithms. But why is this important? Because in digital art the image doesn’t exist as a physical object but as a graphical visualisation of an invisible code to our eyes. In other words digital art breaks with the mould of the classical or traditional representation of the objects and in a way fools the spectatorsince what is behind the image is a mathematic code.
So what advantages there are in digital art? For me the greatest benefit of digital art is its ability to combine elements from different sources into a perfectly joined piece of work, for example we could create digital work from a digital or a scanned photography on the computer and use it as a starting point to create a new piece of art, using a drawing tablet and the painting tools of any painting software, or if we talk about digital music there is a large amount of advantages such as long life as the music that a CD or MP3 holds can be played just as well even if you play it a million times it would sound just like the first time in contrast to analogue mediums that used to wear out after a while such as audio tapes or vinylalbums. Another important advantage such as copying, with the invention of multi-track recording, it became possible for a single person to create music in layers, adding and subtracting to create a finished piece of work, digital music/data can be copied or mixed so much easier to create new forms of art like mixed music for a DJ or educational recordings for a museum!, it’s easy to edit so we can getsections of it without damaging and even add it to a video to create a more interactive experience to the museum visitor, these are just few examples on how workable digital can be.
Work in all these forms can be now done on a computer with few interrelated software programs, some other advantages can be mentioned such as storage, that is space saving and portable, volumes of data can be storedon a single piece of media and the data can be located, accessed and modify quickly from any computer, length of play or flexibility. With digital art is very easy to embark ourselves in experimenting new adventures as it is forgivable, we have access to an endless trial and error tool which is the “undo” bottom which it can saves us from having to start from scratch whenever we go wrong, ending...
