One Hundred Years of Solitude
The book of One Hundred Years of Solitude, by the author Gabriel Garcia Marquez was published in 1967 in his native Spanish language. All started when he had wanted to write a novel based on the tone of his grandmother used to tell her stories. He comment that she told things that sounded supernatural and fantastic, so went he discovered the tone was when hewas on a bus to Mexico City. He returned to his home, and he wrote everyday for eighteen months. But his family faced some difficult circumstances at the time that he wrote the novel. For example, his wife had to ask for food on credit from their butcher and he also sold his car so his family would have money to live on while he wrote. This novel represents rural towns throughout Latin America orat least near Garcia Marquez’s native Aracata Colombia. Finally, he won the novel prize in literature with this book in 1982.
In this essay, I would like to comment that One Hundred Years of Solitude is a rich novel, and I suggest that it cannot be banned or challenged because by examining it; I noticed that the novel has a good reasons to deal with such as it is an epic, the double senseof time and the magical realism, and the meaning of solitude in the novel.
The book tells the story of several generations of the Buendia family, the founders of the imaginary Colombia town. This novel relates the story of this family and he beginning and the end of the Macondo town. There are some events in the story that this family recall like the politic, social, religion, solitude, and sexuality. The Buendia family can be grouped into seven generations, but the founders of the Buendia clan were the first generation. Jose Arcadio Buendia is the founder of Macondo and the Buendia patriarch his wife Ursula Iguaran is arguably the central character of the book another one is Pilar Ternera is the village soothsayer and Melquiades is the leader of a troupe of gypsies. He is themost powerful figure in the novel also, he returned from the dead. Also this novel threats the point of solitude. It suggested loneliness, the sense of being apart from others, although ultimately each human being is alone. Finally, the novel is the history of the founding, development, and death of human settlement Macondo, and of the most important family in that town, the Buendias.
Itseems clear to me that, in any conventional sense of the literary term, we are dealing here with an epic work: a long narrative fiction with a huge scope which holds up for our inspection a particular cultural moment in the history of a people. In following the historical narrative like many other epics, this novel has connections with a particular people's historical reality, in this case thedevelopment of the Latin American country of Colombia since its independence from Spain in the early nineteenth century (1810 to 1825). The seemingly endless civil war portrayed in the novel one can see as directly based on the civil wars in Columbia from 1885 to 1902, and the character of Colonel Aureliano has many affinities with General Rafael Uribe Uribe, under whom the grandfather of the authorfought. I mention this brief history, not because I think one needs to know the historical facts in order to appreciate the novel, but simply to point out that One Hundred Years of Solitude, like so many other great epics takes its origin in the history, real or imagined, of a particular people. Finally, I want to conclude this paragraph with the next sentence One Hundred Years of Solitude canjustly lay claim to being, perhaps, the greatest of all Latin American novels, appropriately enough, since the story of the Buendia family is obviously a metaphor for the history of the continent since Independence, that is, for the neocolonial period. Also, I believe, a narrative about the myths of Latin American history.
Second reasons are the double sense of time and the magical realism. I...
