SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS

What is the importance of studying the morphemes for English teachers?

Before explaining the importance of morphemes for English teachers is necessary to know what amorpheme is. According to Stageberg (1971, p.85), a morpheme is a short segment of language that meets three criteria: a) It is a word or a part of a word that has meaning; b) It cannot be divided intosmaller meaningful parts without violation of its meaning; c) and it recurs in different verbal environments with a relatively stable meaning. For instance, the word brighten has two morphemes: bright and –en.

Example: bright = light / -en = make =make light

According to this /-en / is a part of a word that has meaning. It cannot be divided into smaller meaningful units and it recurs with a stable meaning in words like: cheapen, darken, soften, etc. (Stageberg, 1971, p.86).

This will give him / her the tools to explain to the students any doubt they could have in relation to a word. For instance, it is well known that words are formed...
