Summary (150 to 300 words)A solution for determining the age of some ancient fabrics is being studied and would mean a great contribution to history. Silk has had a very big variety of uses: paper, currency, clothes. Alsoconsidered a luxury, thousands of years ago, the ancient dignitaries wore silken clothes.Nowadays, looking at those products helps us to know more about past cultures, but not exactly the year in whichthey were made. For that reason, scientists have been coming up with different methods; and the latest one, seems to be the most accurate one. The method consists on analyzing two varieties of aminoacids: all silken fabrics first have the D structure, and as the years go by, it begins to turn into an L structure. The difference between the amounts of each amino acid would measure the age of thefabric. One of the benefits of this method is that you only need a speck of fabric to do the analysis; so if you want to analyze an expensive fabric, you wouldn’t damage it for achieving your purpose.|

It is very amazing to know how scientists are always coming up with new methods to help the pastbe better understood. Throughout the years, silk has been used as a resource to produce other things. As it has had a great importance in the past, it would be very helpful to make ancient cultures bebetter understood, as they represented in their textiles things about their life. Also, I think it is important to be always innovating, because it could reduce the time people spend on doing thingsthat can be done in an easier way and cheaper. |
