WE ARE MAKE A NEW WORLD, PAUL NASH

Perhaps most famous for his devastatingcanvases from the First World War trenches, Paul Nash went on to become the most important landscape painter of the pre-Second World War period and a pioneer of modernism in Britain.
The view over adesolate landscape with shattered trees, the earth a mass of shell holes. The sun hangs high in the sky, beams of light shining down through heavy, earth-coloured clouds. This work is one of the mostmemorable images of the First World War. The title mocks the ambitions of the war, as the sun rises on a scene of the total desolation. The landscape has become un-navigable, unrecognisable and utterlybarren. The mounds of earth act almost as gravestones amongst the death and desolation. Nash was looking for a new kind of symbolism divorced from the more traditional Symbolist principles. He realisedthat the ideas had been presenting in a figurative way before the war could be more meaningful in pure landscape form. We are Making a New World was a title chosen by Nash as he felt it was a vitalpart of the message. SBORARE SBORARE

Paul Nash was an official war artist in both world wars. His drawings andpaintings from World War One contained an explicit and angry anti-war message, and his work in World War Two continued this didactic element but with notable differences.
The rising sun in ‘We are makinga New World’ breaks into No Man’s Land on the Western Front. This is a malleable landscape, constantly reshaped and redrawn by bombardment and attacks. Consequently it is un-mappable, people areexcluded, it is ownerless, dead and polluted.
In Nash’s bitter vision the sun will continue to rise each and every day to expose the desecration and to repeat judgment on the perpetrators. This new...
