Anime (Japanese: アニメ?, [a.ni.me] ( listen); i/ˈænɨmeɪ/ or /ˈɑːnɨmeɪ/) are Japanese cartoons and computer animation.[1] The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese. InEnglish, the term is defined as a style of animation originating in Japan, which often features colorful graphics, vibrant characters and action-filled plots with fantastic or futuristic themes.[2] Theintended meaning of the term sometimes varies depending on the context.[3]
While the earliest known Japanese animation dates to 1917, and many original Japanese animations were produced in the ensuingdecades, the characteristic anime style developed in the 1960s—notably with the work of Osamu Tezuka—and became known outside Japan in the 1980s.
Anime, like manga, has a large audience in Japan andrecognition throughout the world. Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online.
Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist. Itis used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and Internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction. As the market for anime increased in Japan, italso gained popularity in East and Southeast Asia. Anime is currently popular in many different regions around the world.
Manga is the Japanese word for comics. It is used in the English-speaking worldas a generic term for all comic books and graphic novels that were originally published in Japan. Manga is often considered an artistic and storytelling style that can also encompass non-Japaneseworks, however. The term "AmeriManga" is sometimes used to refer to comics created by American artists in a manga style. Manwha is the Korean equivalent of that idea.
In Japan, manga is either read inserialized form in monthly magazines or comic books, or in graphic novels, which are book-length comics. All formats exist in translation, but graphic novels are much more common and can fill a number...
