Anselm Of Canterbury (1033-1109)

He was born at Aosta in Alpine Italy and educated in Normandy. Anselm became a Benedictine monk, teacher, and abbot (the superior of a monastery) butcontinued his ecclesiastical career in England. Having been appointed the second Norman archbishop of Canterbury in 1093, Anselm secured the Westminster Agreement of 1107, guaranteeing the (partial)independence of the church from the civil state.

Born into the noble family of Candia, he entered the Benedictine order at the Abbey of Bec at the age of twenty-seven, where he became abbot in 1079. Hebecame Archbishop of Canterbury under William II of England, and was exiled from England from 1097 to 1100, and again from 1105 to 1107 under Henry I of England as a result of the investiturecontroversy, the most significant conflict between Church and State in Medieval Europe.Anselm was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1720 by "Papal Bulla" of Pope Clement XI.

In a series of short workssuch as De Libertate Arbitrii (On Free Will), De Casu Diaboli (The Fall of the Devil), and the lengthier dialogue Cur Deus Homo (Why God became Man), Anselm propounded a satisfaction theory of theatonement, The reconciliation of God and humans brought about by the redemptive life and death of Jesus, upon which the incarnation promises relief from the strict demands of divine justice. He defended anotion of the relation between philosophy and theology that, like Augustine's, emphasized the methodological priority of faith over reason, since truth is to be achieved only through "fides quaerensintellectum" ("faith seeking understanding"). Anselm's combination of Christianity, neoplatonic metaphysics, and Aristotelean logic in the form of dialectical question-and-answer was an important...
