ARCOSEl arco es la base de la construcción en fabrica: es la forma natural de salvar un vano con un material que resiste bien las compresiones y poco o nada las tracciones- las dovelas de un arco se empujan entre sí al intentar caer hacia abajo y son precisamente estos empujes los que las mantienen en equilibrio. “El arco nunca duerme”, dice un antiguo proverbio árabe aludiendo al empuje constanteque ejercen los arcos. Este empuje debe ser resistido por los estribos, y el problema de calcular la dimensión adecuada para arcos y estribos es el tema central de toda la construcción abovedada en fábrica desde sus orígenes hace unos 6 000 años.
