Unit 1: Are You Listening?
Summary Conference
In this conference what I learned was related to some issues we face in our English textbooks and English programs.
In our case, we analyzed theInterchange textbook, and we all agree that is an excellent book and it has many different activities that engage students into practice the language, and the listening tasks has different objectives suchas understanding complex conversation between native speakers, listening to different pronunciation, how the tone of voice can change the meaning of the message etc. But unfortunately it lacks of realmaterial that our students will face on their daily life. E.g. The conversations are really easy to follow and to understand since the speakers speech are previously prepared and practice which makesit easy to learners’ ears and we know that in real life is not like that, common conversations have false starts, hesitation, different pronunciation which make real speech a little harder tounderstand. So besides the textbooks we need to provide students with more real material, asking them to practice with native speakers and engaging them into discussions where they can listen to each other.In addition to that textbooks cannot provide students with all the types of listening, of course it has dialogues, monologues, non-reciprocal listening but what about the reciprocal, it is hard topractice that kind of exercises with the stereo or a video, so that’s the moment when we as teachers participate in the activity by planning many more activities where reciprocal listening can happen.I think is really important to teach how and what to listen to our student because, although we are listening to everything that surround us in our life almost 70% of the time listening, the input isnot always the appropriate, a clear example is when our students think that they can learn English just by listening to songs our watching to videos, TV shows etc. Is good to practice doing those...
