WHO WHERE ASSYRIAN?
The Assyrians were Semitic people living in the northern reaches of Mesopotamia; they have a long history in the area, but for most of that history they are subjugated to the more powerful kingdoms and peoples to the south. The new state grew around four cities fed by the waters or tributaries of the Tigris: Ashur, Arbela, Nimrud (or Calah) and Nineveh. They took their common language and their arts from Sumeria, but modified them later into an almost undistinguishable similarity to the language and arts of Babylonia. However, unlike Babylon, from beginning to end they were a race of warriors, more crueler and more brutal that any other race before. Their history is one of kings and slaves, wars and conquests, bloody victories and sudden defeat.EARLY EMPIRE

About 1810 BC an Assyrian king, Shamshi-Adad I succeeded in extending the territory of Assyria from the Zagros Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. Shamshi-Adad may have been the first ruler to establish a centrally organized empire in the ancient Middle East.
He divided his kingdom into districts under specially appointed administrators and councils, instituted a system ofcouriers, and took a census of the population at regular intervals.
This first Assyrian Empire did not last long, however; Shamshi-Adad's son, Ishme-Dagan I, was defeated about 1760 BC by the Babylonian king Hammurabi, and Assyria became part of the Babylonian Empire.

RELIGION AND BELIEFS
Assyrians have practiced two religions throughout their history: Ashurism and Christianity.
Ashurism was, ofcourse, the first religion of the Assyrians. The very word Assyrian, in its Latin form, derives from the name of Ashur, the Assyrian god.
Assyrians continued to practice Ashurism until 256 A.D, although by that time, most Assyrians had accepted Christianity.
Indeed, Assyrians were the first nation to accept Christianity, and the Assyrian Church was founded in 33 A.D. by Thomas, Bortholemewand Thaddeus.

Along the way the soldiers collected whatever took their fancy: cloth, gold, artwork, or slaves.
Assyrian inscriptions call this "tribute", but people either gave it in order to keep from being attacked, or the Assyrian soldiers attacked them and took it anyway.
These plundering expeditions continued more or less every year for hundreds of years, down to Assurnasirpal's reign inthe 800s BC.

ECONOMY
The economy of Assyrian King Sargon II in Babylonia was based at least partially on animal husbandry and on agriculture. Horses, mules, oxen, sheep, and goats were captured from the Aramean tribes and a percentage of the annual increase of their flocks was designated for tribute to Assyria which was growing in population and needed as much sources for food andtransportation as possible.

TECHNOLOGY
The Assyrian people had an incredible evolution in technology of weapons. The Assyrian army was feared for many reasons one including the use of iron in their weapons.
The Assyrians were the first to use iron in spears, swords, shields and armor. They even tipped their battering rams for extra effectiveness.
When the Assyrians first attacked their enemies withthese awesome novelties of war, it caused almost as profound a reaction as the atom bomb has in our time.
Assyrians are an ancient group of people who lived in the Middle Eastern region of Mesopotamia. This group is known for many inventions which we still use today, such as the wheel and written language.
The Assyrian Empire thrived around 3500 B.C. until the capital city, Ninevah, wasdestroyed in 612 B.C. by the Meades, Scythians and Chaldeans. Modern Assyrians claim lineage through the Assyrian Empire, though religious beliefs have changed somewhat over the years.

FOOD
The earliest evidence of domestic sheep comes from the site of Zawi Chemi Shanidar (Iraq), and projects their history back to about 9000 BC.
The bones showed that this early community was killing a large part...
