AGROMERCANTIL BANK
HISTORY:
Agromercantil Bank of Guatemala S.A. is a merger of two banks of solid reputation and long tradition as were Agricola Mercatil Bank and Bank of Agro. They origins dateback to June 30, 1926, when it was created the central bank of Guatemala, which absorbed the functions of the Regulatory Fund, in charge of ensuring international stability ofthe currency, capitalized with contributions from the government but most of the private sector.
It makes the first formal session of the new institution on July 5, 1926, chaired by Mr.Carlos O. Zachrisson, inthe presence of director Mr. José Aycinena , Mr. Juan Irigoyen, Mr. Arturo Castillo, Ernesto Herrera, Antonio Peyré, Carlos Quezada, Mr. Carlos Salazar and Mr. Federico Rubio, Cash Mr. Luis Velasquez and counterMr. Salvador Montenegro Wolters.
On September 15, 1926 at three in the afternoon, making the first working session of the board and began its operations with thepublic. And Central Bank started issuing thenew and current monetary unit of Guatemala, "El Quetzal". From 1926 to 1945 the bank was responsible for the regulation of official monetary issue being the financial agent of the state, also wascharged, among other cases of historical significance, the cancellation of the so-called "English Debt.”
The Government ofthe Revolution of 1944 establishing the current Bank of Guatemala,who assumed the duties of the Central Bank, so the 1st. February 1948 was renamed as the Agricola Mercantil Bank Trade, continuing a tradition of trust and confidence of the Guatemalan public. Mid-fifty, agroup of progressive farmers had the vision to create a new institution that would support this important economic activity in the country. With the backing of the Government, this new institution openedits doors on August 16, 1956 under the name Banco del Agro. This bank was capitalized with contributions of more than 4,000 farmers, who thereafter, through support to agriculture...
