Instructions

The major project for HRE 3723 is to write apaper profiling a significant leader in your life. This paper will be worth 25% of your final grade.

The purpose of this document is to provide:
Detailed instructions on the project
Interview questions for you to use to obtain information from your leader

Goal of the Project
The general goal of this project is to have you take topics from the textbook and understand how they apply to onespecific leader. Essentially this person will be your living case study of what we study in our textbook. My desired outcome is that you will understand the textbook material not only in theory from class lectures, but also in practice from the leader you profile. It will also create a mentoring experience for you as you learn how to learn from another leader.
Instructions for the Project
1.Select a leader who has a significant presence in your life. Generally this person should NOT be a fellow student, though I will consider occasional exceptions if there are strong reasons for it. I don’t allow student leaders because I want you to connect with someone who has more experience as a leader.

This person can be ANY type of leader—for example, he/she could be at work, church, community, sports team, etc. Family members are acceptable. All that I require is that the person:
a. Lead other people to accomplish tasks/goals.
b. Be significant to you as a leader.
c. Have substantial experience as a leader.

2. Explain the nature of this project to your leader. Most leaders like to know what they are getting themselves into so explain the full scope of the project. Thegood news is most leaders like to mentor young leaders so you should have a relatively easy time getting their agreement.

3. Obtain agreement from your leader to meet with you approximately four times during the semester so you can interview him/her. The only thing your leader will have to do is to answer questions from you in an interview format. DO NOT ASK THEM TO WRITE ANSWERS TO THEQUESTIONS. You need to be VERY sensitive to and respectful of his/her time.

4. Plan to meet with him/her four times during the semester. I recommend that you conduct four interview sessions approximately on this schedule:

a. After we complete chapter 3
b. After we complete chapter 6
c. After we complete chapter 8
d. After we complete chapter 10

5. Meeting in person is best-but otheroptions are allowed. If your leader is not local then I strongly suggest using Skype so you can see each other. But telephone will work as a last resort.

6. Parents are an acceptable choice for your leader. However, be sure to interview them about their role as a leader, not as your parent. You will likely learn a lot about your parent that you didn’t know so it can be fun.

7. Use theinterview questions in this guide to collect information from your leader. You are expected to address EACH question in your final paper so be sure to cover each of the questions in your interview. But, you are not required to go beyond these questions unless you want to.

Format of Your Paper
Here are the guidelines for the paper:
You MUST use the sub-headings that are shown in red in thisdocument as the sub-headings in your report.
You must write the information you collect in narrative form using good technical English and writing skills. Do NOT just provide me with typed notes. You should use your notes to report the answers in a PAPER format.
Paper should be 8 – 10 pages, 12 pt font, 1” margin.
Paper must be typed and double-spaced
Must be turned in by the date and time...
