What was I thinking? That’s it… I wasn’t thinking, I don’t think any of us were. If only I hadn’t listened to Jack. He started this. I am the leader! He is supposed tolisten to me, if he had this wouldn’t have happened. Yet the entire group encouraged me to do it. We became savages when we are English.
The dance got me excited, the movements, the music; it got allof us excited. The chanting even gave me a character to the reenactment of the hunt: a hunter, strong and fierce, almost like Jack. We reached a high pitch of frenzied energy such energy that feltlike you could jump up to the sky and back down. Kill the beast! I felt the chant grow in my mind and it sending messages to my body on how to act. Just a swing of my arm with a pointy spear would shredthe pig to pieces. Kill the beast! Cut his head! I was out of control, I know that now but I didn’t know then. I kept running around the fire, waiting for the beast to come in some way, I knew thatthe second I would have seen it I would have torn it apart with my hands and teeth. And I did, atleast I thought
Poor Simon, I can just feel his horror as we went up to him when we attacked him. Hetried to explain but I didn’t hear anything then. We didn’t know though! What would the grownups think of us? What would my father think? I love him so much and he is fighting in the war, I want to bejust like him when I grow up. But what would he say? Would he hate me forever?
I do know that the civilized order is disappearing, even the conch looks like a worthless thing we found near thelagoon. I thought that having no grownups here would be completely wacco, yet it’s not. I am the leader and that is kind of like being a grown up right? At least being a leader wasn’t something that Iwanted entirely, not as much as Jack wanted to be. I guess it was my natural leadership qualities that put me in this position, but I’m leader now and he should respect that.
