Canada

Canada is a country that is situated in the north western hemisphere, and is the world’s second largest country. It shares all its land borders with the United States, the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Arctic Ocean. Before being founded as one of Britain’s colonies, Canada was inhabited by thousands of First Nation people. There are several Aboriginal (or First Nation) tribesin Canada, three of which are recognized in Canada’s constitution. These three groups are Indians (now usually referred to as First Nations), Inuit and Métis. There are approximately one million Aboriginals still living in Canada. The name Canada comes from the First Nation group known as the Huron-Iroquois. The word is kanata which means village. Canada became its own independent nation fromBritain after a long process that started in 1867 and ended in 1982. In 1982, it finally gained the ability to amend or change its own constitution.

Canada has ten provinces and three territories, in which its population is about thirty-two million people . The provincial governments of Canada have a lot of power and have say in how their provinces are to be run. Some of these powersinclude education, health care and welfare. The federal government has ultimate power, however if a certain province does not agree with a policy of the federal government, they may choose not to follow it. The most inhabited province is Ontario, where many famous places are found. These places include Ottawa (the nation’s capital) and Toronto (home to the Canadian National Tower). Canada isa very diverse country, and has two official languages. These languages are French and English. It is estimated that about 25% of Canada is French speaking. Canadians pride themselves in their multicultural identity and society.

Canada is often thought to be a frigid cold place, however its climate is very diverse. In the Maritime provinces (or those found on the Atlantic Ocean) thereis a lot of rain, but it does not become too cold in the winter. Nova Scotia, one of the Maritime provinces is where the Bay of Fundy can be found, this is where the highest tides in the world are found. The range of these tides is approximately fifteen metres high. The province of Quebec is very large, and has parts that are both very cold and warm. The south of Quebec, which shares a borderwith the United States is very warm in the summer, but the northern tip of Quebec, which is virtually uninhabited has an average temperature that is below the freezing point.

The province of Ontario is similar to Quebec in that the south is very warm, and the north is cold. In fact, the most populated part of Canada runs from the South of Ontario through to the end of the South ofQuebec. Canada’s prairie provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta) are very flat and barren, with very cold temperatures during the winter. A lot of grain and beef from these provinces is exported around the world. The most western province in Canada is British Colombia. It is the most temperate climate in Canada, with a lot of rain. There are many endangered species that live there, likethe Spirit Bears (which are black bears with white fur). British Colombia even has its own rainforest. In the north of Canada there are three territories. There is the Yukon, where the famous Yukon Gold Rush took place. Nunavut, which was created in 1999, is Canada’s newest territory. Finally, there is the Northwest Territories, one of the coldest places on the planet.

Britain andCanada have a very close relationship. They have a close relationship because Canada was once a British colony. Officially, Canada is still a constitutional monarchy, and the head of the monarch is Queen Elizabeth of England. It is very difficult for Canada to send every document to the Queen for her approval. However, the Queen in Canada is represented by the Governor General. Last year,...
