According to the article, childhood trauma (CT) is a major risk factor for various psychiatric disorders. Here, the author tries to find how much of this symptom is found onspecific disorders and reducecs his investigation to patients affected by schizophrenia and affective disorder only.
2. BACKGROUND LITERATURE
Childhood trauma results from anything that disrupts a child’ssense of safety and security. Experiencing trauma in childhood can have a severe and long-lasting effect. When childhood trauma is not resolved, this fundamental sense of fear and helplessnesscarries over into adulthood, setting the stage for further trauma or in other words a post-traumatic disorder. Post traumatic disorders vary from person to person, but some theories suggest childhood traumacan lead from antisocial to violent behavior, possibly as extreme as serial murder or sociopathy.
3. METHODS
Three hundred five patients were recruited consecutively from psychiatric units at 3major hospitals in Oslo, Norway, diagnosed with Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. Traumatic childhood events were assessed withChildhood Trauma Questionnaire. There was limitations to the retrospective reporting of the abuse.
4. RESULTS
The lack of a healthy control group led to differences in mood symptoms during assessmentand that may contribute to report bias. There was a high prevalence of childhood trauma in patients with severe mental disorder, especially emotional neglect; more physical neglect and abuse inschizophrenia spectrum disorder.
5. CONCLUSION
Eighty-two percent of the patients had experienced one or more CT events, the most frequent subtype of trauma being emotional neglect. Further...
