1. INTRODUCTION
The aim of this project is to learn how to find information about a determinate subject. We have chosen the molecule chloroform as an example and we have looked for different sources of information about it, such as books, articles, patents, websites, etc.; using different databases.
We have chosen chloroform because it is a very common molecule infilms, where villains use it to kidnap people. We thought it would be interesting to know more about this substance and why it makes people fall asleep.
Moreover, we know it is no longer used because it is considered to be a toxic substance that has hazardous consequences to human health, such as lung and liver cancer. Some experiments have been done on rats and mice to test its toxicity.
We havebeen given a list with the number of documents of each type that we have to find. We are going to focus our search on keywords related to what we know about chloroform: its different names, toxicity, cancer, humans, rats, lung, liver, etc.

3.3. Properties
The main properties of thechloroform are that it is a colourless, sweet-smelling and dense substance. It is liquid at ambient temperature and it is volatile.
Chloroform is relatively unreactive but has the capacity to react with some aqueous bases. Moreover, it is miscible with most organic solvents but slightly soluble in water.
Finally, it reacts with oxygen in presence of sunlight to form phosgene, which is verypoisonous
3.4. Applications
FIRST APPLICATIONS
It was originally used to calm people suffering from asthma and as an anaesthetic because its vapour depresses the central nervous system of a patient. It was also used as a sweetener in toothpaste. However it is no longer used in any of this applications because it could be dangerous.
NOWADAYS APPLICATIONS
Chloroform nowadays is mainlyused to produce chlorodifluorometà and as a key starting material for the production of chemicals used in refrigerators and air conditioners. Moreover, it is used as a solvent because of it is relatively unreactive, miscible with most organic liquids, and conveniently volatile. In veterinary medicine it is used externally to kill maggots in wounds.
