The Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, also known as LGBT, community in Colombia, like in most Latin Americancountries, is still a controversy regarding acceptance because of the machismo culture. However, LGBT rights in Colombia have progressed since homosexuality was made legal in 1981.
There are arough estimate of 219,520 predominantly gay men and 615,000 men who have sex with men (MSMs). The numbers for women vary between 48,000 and 96,000. Because of this since 1998 the Constitutional Court hasmade amendments for the rights of LGBTs starting with equalizing the age of consent in Colombia at 14 for both homosexuals and heterosexuals. They also made it impossible for public-school teachers tobe fired because of their sexual orientation, private schools cannot ban the entry of homosexual kids into their facility, and the military cannot discriminate because of this. The ConstitutionalCourt verdict, which applies throughout the national territory, refers to 42 articles in 28 different codes or laws that deal with unmarried couples or common-law unions, ruling that in each case, thebenefit, guarantee or obligation in question "also covers same-sex couples and unions." Couples can claim these rights after living together for two years. Now, same sex couples have the same rights asheterosexual couples. However, there is still more to fight for, such as the right for same-sex couples to adopt.
With the help of the international community we wish to increase education aboutLGBT communities and rights to stop this violence and prejudice towards them. It is a group effort and Colombia is willing to collaborate with the international community to make this possible. Weencourage other countries to hold events celebrating the uniqueness of these communities, such as the Gay Pride Parade in Colombia which was first held in 200. We must break these horrible stereotypes...
