What is Commedia dell arte?
The Commedia dell arte is a gender of comedy on theater based primarily in masks and improvisation. This kind of comedyrepresents a great challenge for any actor as it is necessary to have a large repertoire of skills such as: singing, dancing, acrobatics, monologues, poems, body expression, andmore importantly: imagination.
The play
Like all plays in theater, in the commedia dell arte there`s a script that works as a guide for the stage performance.
This script isnot composed by character dialogues but for general instructions that the actor must follow.
This leads to improvisation as a primary resource.
The Characters
The storiesare always performed by the same characters, what changes is the plot. Each one of them has defined characteristics making them unique.
I'll introduce you to my favorites.Arlecchino: He is an attractive servant, elegant and very clever. has the behavior of a spoiled child. His interest is always the food and the company of attractive women, ismadly in love with Colombina. He is absolutely the funniest character.
Arlecchino mask is based on two animals: the cat and the monkey.
Colombina: A maid, she is the onlysane character in the play. She does not wear a mask, but always have a very heavy makeup around her eyes. She manipulates Arlecchino to get what she wants and use a drumevery time anyone flirts with her.
The lovers: They're a prince and a princess, always looking to be together to live their love, they dont use mask with the intention toexpress intense facial emotions.
Pantaleone: A trader by nature. Represents wealth and power, likes to make fun of the tragedy of others and try to win the affection of Colombina.
