How can we save money and protect the environment?
The importance of reducing our energy consumption.
Energy is essential in our everyday lives, but at the same time it is a scarcecommodity, with a cost not only to your pocket but also to the environment.
Climate change is the biggest environmental threat of the 21st century, with far reaching economic, social andenvironmental consequences. 60% of greenhouse gas emissions are due to unnecessary actions carried out by the people, therefore we must assume that everyone, even on an individual level, plays apart.
To save energy means to reduce pollution, and in turn care more for our health. If everyone played their part to reduce their energy consumption in our day to day activities, we would becontributing towards a better future.
Also in this way, we would continue to improve our family budgets, with lower energy bills.
Remember, the cheapest energy, with respect to theenvironment and economically, is that which we don’t use.
Advice on how to save energy at home
1. Choose only electric appliances with the energy label, A, A+, or A++(Fridges, freezers, washingmachines, tumble dryers and dishwashers) they use 70% less energy with the same results.
2. Choose electric appliances that are of a size suitable for you.
3. Only use the washing machineand dishwasher when they are full.
4. The correct maintenance and cleaning of electric appliances, prolongs their life and saves energy.
5. Don’t leave TVs, musical equipment, DVDplayers on standby, turn them of completely.
6. Use computers and printers that have energy saving systems.
7. Make the most of daylight.
8. Turn off the light before leaving the room.
9. Inplaces where the light is used for more than an hour at a time, aim to install energy saving bulbs. They may be more expensive to buy but they consume 80% less energy and last 8 times longer.
