Politics has always been a great part of the Puerto Rican’s lives. Every four years, the citizens join the first Tuesday of November to vote for the candidate whom they deem to be the most appropriate to govern the island. Two of the three most important political parties are: Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP) and Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño (PIP). The PNP and PIP take differentstands—PNP supports statehood while PIP supports independence. Nonetheless, both the PNP and PIP have in their interest to better Puerto Rico, therefore they concur in emphasizing the importance of two main topics that help shape the future and development of Puerto Rico: security and education.
The Partido Nuevo Progresista firmly approaches the prevalent issue of security. The PNP Platform states thatthe first step towards the strengthening of security is to recognize the real causes of violence in the island and to honor those men and women that risk their lives every day to ensure our security and well being. They express their visions accompanied by their strategies. Serving and protecting all Puerto Ricans, offering public security services of excellence to prevent criminal activity,maintaining public order, and improving the quality of life are some of the visions the PNP has. They also strongly believe in developing a relationship based on dignity and respect between the agencies of law and order in our communities, as well as recognizing the commitment and professionalism of our police and meeting their needs to ensure they have the best tools to help benefit our citizens. Thestrategies proposed by the PNP are the following: police reform—creating a new culture of mutual respect, responsibility, and accountability, focused on protecting and serving our people; protecting the citizens with values, integrity and excellence; focusing on clearing up crimes with new trainings, resources, and technology; state-federal government collaboration; innovation and strategies forpublic security—developing and implementing technology and networked communications as an effective tool for the prevention, detection, investigation, and prosecution of crimes; frontier of the Caribbean—where trafficking shall be declared an issue of national security; and rapid and effective response to emergencies and disasters.
The Partido Nuevo Progresista tackles education in a determinedmanner, having in mind the idea of promoting in the youth the skills and values that are required in order to succeed in the world of the twenty-first century and Puerto Rico. Also, the PNP wants to create a complete educational experience that is relevant to the circumstances that we live in today. The facilitation of a decentralized education system that integrates our communities and promotesinnovation and creativity is also one of the main visions of the PNP Platform. Nonetheless, that does not subtract from recognizing the significant role a triumphant teacher plays in the development of the youth society. The strategies to obtain the aforementioned are the following: establish a vision and long-term goals to achieve true transformation of the public education system in the next 10years; expand investment in school infrastructure improvements; create learning spaces worthy of our teachers and students with the best modern tools; fully integrate bilingual education system so that all our children acquire full fluency in Spanish and English; eliminate bureaucracy; and finally, demand the highest levels of quality throughout the education system, while using measurement tools toassess local and international results of our system with the same standards that are used to measure the best education systems in the world.
