INTERTEXTUALITY AND ADAPTIONS:
HAMLET AND SONS OF ANARCHY
“The tragedy of Hamlet, prince of Denmark” is one of the most famous tragedies of William Shakespeare. The Danish prince Hamletmet his father’s spirit murdered by his own brother Claudius, the king of Denmark, in order to take revenge for the crime committed in him.
Hamlet lies in wait for his uncle and stabserroneously the high treasurer Polonius. His son Laertes demands, supports from Claudius, Hamlet to the duel. Hamlet wins wounded and stabs Claudius, before he dies, finally, himself.“Sons of Anarchy” tells the story of a Biker’s Club in Charming, North California. This club, named “Sons of Anarchy”, “SAMCRO” or “Sam Crow”, handles weapon and influences traffic.
The maincharacter Jax Teller, the vice-president of the club, presents his doubts about the “Sam Crow” activities that are highly criminal.
The familiar drama of " Sons of Anarchy " isindirectly based on Shakespeare’s "Hamlet". Clay is based on the role of King Claudius, who murdered his own brother to win the throne and marry Queen Gertrude. Clay marries Gemma, the Gertrude’sfigure, and gains the control of the “Sons of Anarchy”, which her dead husband used to run. Jax is the Prince Hamlet.
Jax's reflections on “Sam Crow’s” culture, accentuated by the birth ofhis son, refer to Hamlet's melancholy about the kingdom, and specially, about the death of the King.
On one hand, Jax "speaks" with his father across the notes that he never published.Hamlet, on the other hand, communicates directly with the ghost of his father.
If William Shakespeare had made a gangster's series, it would be slightly similar to “Sons of Anarchy”. Inconclusion, there are too many similarities between both histories, so many that we might consider Jax to be the Hamlet motorist and “Sons of Anarchy” as a piece of art of our times.
