Peter’s Declaration about Jesus
 13 When Jesus came to theregion of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

 14 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah orone of the other prophets.”
 15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simonson of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I willbuild my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

Notes:
We see here that the disciples answered Jesus question with a common view, that Jesus was a one of the great prophets thatcame back to life. Peter however, confessed Jesus as the divine and as the long awaited Messiah.

On verse 18, Jesus blesses Simon Peter, because it was God himself who revealed this to Peter.The rock on which Jesus would build his Church has been identified as;

Jesus himself - giving us salvation by dying for us on the cross
Peter - the first great leader in the church at Jerusalem
Theconfession of faith that Peter gave and that all true believers would give.

Jesus dies on the cross for us so that we may have eternal life and so that we as believers may bring others to Christso that those who don’t believe may be saved. This is why he gives us the “Great Commission”.
