Catering is the business of proving food at all kinds of events and to various types of people. Even though it is one of the oldest, the cateringindustry is one of the fastest growing. It is a very diverse sector which includes basic food catering for institutions such as schools, hospitals, businesses, government departments and privatefunctions such as weddings or parties and special event catering for banquets, conferences, product presentations and which include not only catering but also presentation and design of the actual event.Apart from providing food an event contract service could include accommodation for guests, entertainment for event (musicians, fireworks, games), provision of security services for large events,planning transportation to and from the event, hiring of specialised staff (waiters, chefs, cleaners and supervisors) and may also involve other specialise concepts such as the graphic design of themenus/invitations, creating a design concept of the whole event (decoration of the area, lighting, choice of music, table settings, choosing promotional gifts, contracting an actor or entertainer to act as ahost..). Finally it is also important to conduct evaluations of the event to learn from any mistakes.
Because of the strong competition Event Catering Companies need to invest in marketing and abranding strategy to place their product: this would include promotional materials such as business cards and brochures, creating a web site, mailings and advertising in the specialised press. As thereare many different market segments business need to do some market research and target the segments they are interested in - these could be corporate, public or private. Businesses need to define theirunique selling proposition to differentiate themselves from the competition.
