Barcelonés, escritor, Catedrático de Estética de la
Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Ha publicado una veintena de

En «Cuerpo y creación en Miguel Ángel» se
pretende relacionar la evolución de la trayectoria
artística del artista florentino con sus ideas acerca del
cuerpo humano. A lo largo de su prolongadísima
travesía en la primera fila del arte Miguel Ángel fueevolucionando drásticamente en su perspectiva de la
corporeidad. Al principio estuvo vinculado a las
doctrinas del humanismo toscano, exaltando
consecuentemente la belleza y luminosidad de los
cuerpos. Con el paso de los años, sin embargo, el artista
se fue alejando de esta herencia para entrar en una fase
de paulatina conflictividad con la anatomía humana.
Por un lado recuperó aspectos de laideología medieval
y por otro adelantó muchas coordenadas pertenecientes
al universo del barroco. A través de sus crisis religiosas
y filosóficas y, en especial, del insuperable antagonismo
entre materia y espíritu, la última etapa de Miguel
Ángel está presidida por el «inacabado» y el
escepticismo con respecto a la belleza física. En el texto
se relacionan todas esas cuestiones estéticas con la«enfermedad de la melancolía» y con los rasgos
caracterológicos de los «nacidos bajo el signo de
Saturno». Tras la biografía célebre de Vasari, Miguel
Ángel se convierte en la piedra angular para edificar la
figura del artista en la cultura europea, figura que
llegará a su mayor radicalismo con la conciencia
romántica y con la modernidad.

Abstract
BODY AND CREATION IN MICHELANGELO
The aim of this article is to relate the evolution of
the artistic trajectory of the Florentinian artist with his
ideas about the human body. Through his greatly
prolonged crossing in the artistic foreground,
Michelangelo’s perspective of corporeity dramatically
evolved. At the beginning, he was involved with the
doctrines of theToscan humanism; consequently
praising the beauty and luminosity of the bodies. Over
the years, however, the artist went on withdrawing
from this inheritance to enter a phase of gradual
discordance with the human anatomy. On one side, he
recovered features of the medieval ideology and, on the
other, he set ahead a lot of coordinates belonging to
the universe of the Baroque. Through hisphilosophical
and religious crisis and, specially, the unbearable
antagonism between matter and spirit, the last period
of Michelangelo was presided by the «unended» and
the skepticism regarding the physical beauty. In the
text, all those aesthetic questions are related with the
«illness of melancholy» and the charactereological
features of the «born under the sign of Saturn». After
thecelebrated biography of Vasari, Michelangelo
became the keystone to build up the figure of the artist
in the European culture, figure that reached its
greatest radicalism with the arrival of the romantic
conscience and the modernity.

Introducción
Francisco de Hollanda nosrefiere la opinión de
Miguel Ángel según la cual el artista «tiene la habilidad
de inventar aquello que nunca fue encontrado». Sean o
no exactas dichas palabras, no hay duda que recogen
certeramente la concepción del hombre al que son
atribuidas. La recurrencia al espejo de la naturaleza, la
mimesis, tiene todavía un lugar importante en el
proceso artístico miguelangeliano en cuanto...
