Important finding could prevent type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 percent of diabetes cases in the world. The number of peopleaffected is very high . Only in Canada is 2.5 million people. This is a severe disorder that causes the cells are unable to incorporate and use sugar.
The team of Dr. Alexey Pshezhetsky , ResearchCenter , University Hospital Sainte -Justine , affiliated with the University of Montreal , Canada, has found that insulin resistance experienced by patients with type 2 diabetes is caused in part bythe lack of a protein that the scientific community had not previously associated with diabetes. The finding made now could potentially help prevent many cases of diabetes.
Pshezhetsky andcolleagues have found , through experiments conducted on cells and mice, which Neu1 protein , acting as a switch, is able to activate and deactivate the absorption of sugar into cells to regulate the amountof sialic acid in the surface thereof .
The researchers are now trying to find a way to restore appropriate levels of Neu1 and function in diabetes . If they succeed , it could be sufficient toactivate a gene , promoter of that protein, to prevent or alleviate type 2 diabetes.
The number of cases of type 2 diabetes diagnosed worldwide continues to grow incredibly fast : According to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) in the United States, cases in that country increased on average by 82 percent between 1995 and 2010 . In the state of Oklahoma, the number increased by226 percent. The incidence of this disease has increased in parallel to the rise of epidemic proportions in recent years has experienced obesity in industrialized nations.
