Who: Cristobal Colon
When: 1492
Where: Traveling through atlantic and on the island in the Caribbean


- Several days traveling in the ocean, not knowing where or how or how far they are from their destination
- Colon writes about daily measurements of the distance and how he tricks the sailors into believing that they have traveled less distance than they have- Although it is by Colon, it is not a word for word what he said, more of a compilation of manuscripts
- Text was for the king and queen of Spain to convince them to continue funding his expeditions
- It was written in a very persuasive way and told of the richness of the island and the possibility for profit  
- Talks very little about natives, notes that they are beautiful people and theyare naked

- was written to give an account of his discoveries
- It over exaggerated the size and beauty of the islands
- Describes the natives and overstates the fact that they could be easily taken over and converted into Christendom
- It is trying to get more funding for hisexpeditions

Who: Fray Ramon Pane  
When: 1496
Where: In the New World


- Was a companion of Columbus in his second voyage to the new world
- Was a curious and understanding man and integrated himself in the native culture
- analyzed the beliefs of the indians and their traditions, trying to understand their culture  
- Was moreaccepting of indian culture than other authors and did not try to convert indians as much but rather understand them
- He did not that the way they thought was wrong and could not really explain natural occurrences
- He could see why they would believe in what they do but did not think it was right   



La Segunda Carta Relacion de Cortes


Who:  Hernan Cortes
When: 1522
Where: NuevaEspaña


- Cortes lived in Cuba and wanted to become an explorer
- Set out to discover main land america without the consent of the governor of Cuba
- wrote this latter to get funding from king and approval to make his voyage and discoveries legal
- Discovers Tenochtitlan, the mexican capital city and describes its beauty with great detail
- Talks about the markets, the streets and thegreat buildings
- The great amount of gold and riches the civilization possess
- Describes Moctezuma as a great king of a great civilization yet he is a tyrant and says that the people under his control want to be freed
- Describes the capturing of Montezuma and the influence he has over him

• Como un “Gran Rey” pero es un líder injusto

• Es tan malo que la gente prefiere Cortes a él voluntariamente
5. Explique la importancia de la consideración de los españoles como enviados "de un antiguo señor" que ofrece Moctezuma.¿Considera que el punto de vista resulta importante en este relato? ¿Por qué?
• Es importante reconocer la influencia que tiene Cortes sobre Moctezuma
• Moctezuma habla en un parlamento con Cortes, y por eso toda la gente reconozca el Rey de España, y que Cortes es su representante
• Están de acuerdo que las leyes de España sean impuestas sobre este nuevo territorio
• La importancia del antiguo...
