If we look back in the last 100 years we will find a period of constant evolution. 20th Century has been an age of innovation, wars, crisis, which have influenced fashion’s history. We cannotunderstand fashion’s evolution without having some information of historical context.
As years go by in 20th century we see that women aesthetic has changed parallel with their liberetion and theirachievements.

1900 “Belle Époque”
In early 1900 we find the Gibson woman with a bust and hip which are significantly large with narrow waist (this silhouette is known as hourglass shape). This kind ofwomen wears corsets and is submissive and obedient.
Then, Gibson woman gave away the new woman created by the couturier Poiret. He invented a woman who had a more fluid silhouette with an empirewaist and long skirts.
In 1914 the First World War broke out and brought changes to fashion. Then we can see the first trousers for women as well as a length of skirt shorter than ever before (theankles and calves are shown).

1920 “Le Garçonne”
In 1920 women style changed again and became into le Garçonne. This new style consisted in a masculine silhouette without insinuating waist and bust.This simple style was decorated with lace and embroidery.
The most used fabric was velvet, thing that changed with the Wall Street Crack of the 29 that forced to use cheaper fabrics.
The women ofthe twenties had their hair cut shorter for the first time.

1930 “Functionality”
In 1930 the old hourglass body shape came back and restructured the clothes which were very simple and austere. Thefabric used was mainly cotton.
The hairstyle of the 30s was wavy and medium length.
In this decade, fashion designers such as Lanvin and Coco Chanel were very distinguished and famous.
1940“Utility clothing”
In 1940 the second World Ward broke out and forced a more austere fashion. Some women recycle their own clothes and made new ones.
Clothes were made from thick fabrics.
