Energy intensity—is a function not only of how much energy is used in their creation, use and disposalbut also of how efficiently the energy is produced. The ABB case describes how its products improve efficiency in both these areas, thereby reducing the need for new power stations. The Statoil casealso shows how determined efforts can halve the energy consumption of offices while that on 3M describes some of the products that can help achieve it.

Recycling—EBARA's activities have been built on providing technology ''veins" to control anddispose of wastes and emissions—but as the case shows its philosophy is to become an "artery" business that recovers resources from the veins. Roche has also cut its raw materials purchases by 80% at oneplant through recycling a process waste product.
Sustainable resources—Ontario Hydro has established a program to expand usage of renewable energy resources. Andersen works hard to ensure that itsprimary raw material of wood is grown in a sustainable manner.
Durability—Andersen's Fibrex composite—a high-value product made from waste sawdust—increases the lifetime of windows while reducingtheir price to consumers. Philips redesigned lighting tubes also last longer and need less maintenance than conventional ones.
