Tlatelolco, Collision of Cultures, for Tripadvisor
In the heart of Mexico City we can find this very important settlement of the “Tlatelolcas”, one of the founder tribes of thetoday Mexico City. This place is full of life History and architectonic contrasts.
We can visit the archeological site, an oasis in this busy district as well as the Santiago Church andconvent, one of the first constructed in Mexico, made with the pyramids stone and place where San Juan Diego, the interlocutor that Our Lady of Guadalupe choose, was baptized and theplace he was traveling for, when the first time She appeared.
This “Plaza” has been witness of some of the more brutal events of our history. I will mention three: The last battleduring the Conquest time; the slaughter of students in 1968 and the earthquake of 1985. Thousands of Mexican souls had been sacrificed here, I hope for a better Mexico. Therefore is aSanctuary, a place to be honored.
The National University, UNAM, has been recently granted with one of the must emblematic buildings of the city, former heath quarters of the Ministry ofForeign Affairs and has been created a Cultural Center, where you can learn languages or assist to art cinema. It has a couple of very interesting museums: The Archeological Museum ofthe Tlatelolco Site with a very interesting and modern displays and a very particular museum: The memorial of 1968.
1968 was a worldwide special year, because the students and younghearts were looking for a better world, and several of these demonstrations finished as big National Tragedies, October 2nd at Tlatelolco was a terrible day. This memorial full ofphotographs and interviews give us a reminder of what should never ever happen again nor in Mexico, nor in the world.
