Military service has traditionally been mandatory for men. In ancient Greece, Sparta was a clear example of militarized society as free men received vigoroustraining from childhood and his life was committed to the military. The Roman army was one of the firstframe professional soldiers permanently.
Most countries have an army, whether professional (USA),with conscripts, ie from aconscription (Russia) or a combination of both systems. Some hosts allow women into their ranks. In Israel, military service is compulsory for both sexes. There are somecountries without armed forces, such as Costa Rica, who based the defense of its territorial integrity in a system of alliances and treaties.
