People and the Land

From the beginning of times in the United States, farming and agriculture covers the period of the early settlers to present day. It definitely fund a livelihood for most of the population; most towns became shipping points for agricultural goods. Most farms were used for subsistence production of their own products. The fast growth of population and the expansion of thefrontier opened up a considerable number of new farms, and clearing the land was a major preoccupation of farmers. Later on, industrialization and urbanization opened up lucrative domestic markets; this changes improved the living conditions of American people.
From the invention of the steel plow in the early years, to the creation of the automotive industry, American people have been thrumultiple changes in their way of living.
Early activities included sharecropping, cotton picking and ranching. People started to settle and cultivate crops in order to stay in the same place. Land tenants often rented spaces and people will pay them with the same products that they will grow in order to be able to live there, this was leading to a schedule to wake up and go to work in order to have foodand shelter. Afterward slaves worked picking cotton, this was a very tedious labor, ‘’According to Tina Turner’s interview in Module #1’’, she remembered the cones and the cuticles being hurt from this activity.
Farmers have always been somewhat abused, in the beginning with slaves working in fields, later on the Mexican people that worked there didn’t have rights or a voice, until Cesar Chavezwas not afraid to fight for his own rights, as mentioned in Document 1 ‘’We are tired of words, of betrayals, of indifference’’ (pg. 288). His movement brought up problems of the mistreated working class and for once is heard.
Some environmental problems occurred after the cotton fields were utilized, soil erosion from the cotton plantation lead to damaged lands, which still affect us these days.It can take up to ten years for the land to recover from the harm that they were exposed too. Another disaster that occurred was the Dust Bowl, a phenomenon that was caused by the severe drought conditions, and extensive farming without the rotation of crops, without natural anchors to keep the soil in place, it dried, turned to dust, and blew away eastward and southward in large dark clouds. Attimes, the clouds blackened the sky, reaching all the way to East Coast cities such as New York and Washington, D.C. Much of the soil ended up deposited in the Atlantic Ocean, carried by prevailing winds, which were in part created by the dry and bare soil conditions.
Despite the diversity of Euro‐American and American Indian societies, wars among the two have shared certain features. In mosteras of conflict, Euro‐Americans had Indian allies; Euro‐American citizen soldiers tended toward greater brutality and less military discipline than professional soldiers; nomadic groups of Indians usually waged war more tenaciously than the more sedentary ones; and the eruption and expansion of war usually stemmed from a Euro‐American drive to acquire Indian land.
Immigration in the United Statesstarted in the colonial period, when Englishmen migrated to America, followed by the Europeans, that came in order to get a better and more prosperous life, created a strong working class. They had to go thru some extremely poor living conditions at the beginning, cluttering up to three families in one small house, and face some discrimination issues. They lived together and developed what iscalled ‘’little cities’’, having neighbors that came from the same country, and had the same culture, stores that provided their typical food; was an advantage for them because it made them have the sensation of being at home. Nowadays there are many towns all around the United States, including, China Town and Korea Town.
In the years from the end of the Civil War in 1865, Americans witnessed the...
