The female role in Mexico had change significantly with the passing of time. Mexico from the colonial days used to be a country with a different point of view against woman; where the men (called machos) had all the power and believed that the women was meant to be in the kitchen and taking care of the children. Women were not aloud to vote or even study but with time, the female role has beenchanging due to many different factors. These include globalization; where women realize that in other countries they have more rights, feminist groups; tired of the female repression, economy; with the different crisis and money problems from Mexico. The males stop being able to support their families on their own. Some brave females such as the famous Sor. Juana Ines De La Cruz, decide to studyeven against the law. In present day, Mexican women do not change in any way for anyone. Since Mexico’s independence no one thought there would be any positive change for women. It was not an easy process but now in paper and from the law, women and male are equal and some will say they have more rights than men.

Firstly, in 1839 according to doña Inglis Calderon, when she first arrived toMexico she wrote in her journal about what Mexican women do. She realized that most of the women population didn’t read, work, ride horses, play, paint or go to balls (Arrom 85, p1). Women were barely mentioned at all in Mexican literature unless they were part of the important societies of that time. According to the Mexican writers, women were barely mentioned and “usually portrayed as passivepowerless beings, absorbed in family duties, confined to the home and totally subordinated to men”(Arrom, 85) and most of the Mexican writers agree that the “marriage and motherhood the duties to which nature solely destined women” (Arrom 85). The perspective of the perfect wife was someone who was only destined to their home, never asks questions, leaving the man in their jobs, understanding thatthe one only power is the husband, depending absolutely on him and willing to please him at all times. The description of a Latin woman was diverse but usually ended with the same major points that women were not aloud to work outside of their homes, their lives should to be completely devoted to their family and practically they are owned by their husband. The colonial time was considered thedark-age for woman (Arrom 85).

On the other hand, the small amount of literate women in colonial Mexico were nuns. One of the nuns was Sor Juana Ines De la Cruz, whose literary writings and knowledge was one of a kind. It couldn´t be compared with any other literature of women in her time in Mexico. Her figure will remain for history as there is nearly no historical data about any other womanwriter during the colonial times and unfortunately no one follow her pad for a considerable amount of time. She can be considered a femineity symbol (Lavrin p24-25).

Furthermore, female participation in Mexico started at the end of the colonial times. The late contemporaries believe that women should start to get involved in social networks and activities, and development of the country. Thisthen allowing and encouraging the female education and labour; not because they were willing to improve the women life or point of view, but implement the changes because they believe that involving women in the development of the country will help to a better performance for Mexico. Female participation was involved in Mexican Independence. There were not many women involved at first, but it wasonly the beginning. After the independence the women participation was more required and in order to get women involved in the development of Mexico, the traditional woman´s point of view and laws changed in favour of women in ways never expected before (Arrom 85 p15). Education become a priority for the following years. One of the projects was to give education to women from all the different...
