The Pit and the Pendulum, by Edgar Allan Poe.


The Pit and the Pendulum (is one of the most famous and celebrated stories of Edgar Allan Poe. It’s is considered one of the most shockingstories in literature of terror; it transmits the abandonment, disorientation, confusion and despair of a person who knows will die.


This story refers to the torture practiced by theInquisition, a catholic institution whose work was the suppression of heresy. The story doesn’t inform about the men’s name or what was his crime. It just talks about him being accused by the Inquisition andhis sentenced to death based on torture. In that moment, the Inquisition used two types of sentences ending in death: a horrible physical suffering or a mental one which was more atrocious. Here AllanPoe shows his vision about the Inquisition.


The story tells of the death sentence of a man, after being accused by representatives of the Inquisition. The men began to see ghostly images inthe figures of the executioners, until he lost his consciousness and felt into a state mind which is unable to made a difference between the reality of the imagination. In that state, he felt he hadbeen transferred to another place and perceived that inevitably descends into an abyss. Then he saw himself in a dark place where there was nothing and he couldn’t distinguish one thing from another,so he lost his consciousness again. While he was awake, he tried to walk around his cell but he almost fell in a pit.


Later, we woke up again and realize he had been tied to a lower bed ofwood, terrified he saw he was hanging from the ceiling and that a huge pendulum over him was moving with increasing speed to his chest; but he had an idea to escape. He looked how the rats which hadeaten his food, were going out from the pit, and with a free hand he started to put the remains of food on the ropes so the rats would climb to the ropes, eat the food and permit him to escape....
