Todas las empresassaben que, dada una curva de demanda, la cantidad demandada será mayor si baja el precio, mientras que, si éste aumenta, la cantidad que los consumidores demandan se reducirá. Una información que tiene más interés para la empresa se refiere a como se verá afectado el ingreso total, que la empresa obtiene como consecuencia del cambio en el precio.

INGRESO TOTAL= PRECIO * CANTIDAD DEMANDADAELASTICIDAD PRECIO DE LA DEMANDA.
En términos más concretos podemos decir que el coeficiente de la elasticidad precio de la demanda es la razón entre la variación porcentual de la cantidad demandada de un bien y la variación de su precio manteniéndose constantes todos los demás factores que afectan a la cantidad demandada.
