American poet consideredone of the founders of modern poetry in his country, to express, simply philosophical and emotional depth, life and emotions of rural New England man. He studied at Oxford University and in 1890 hisfamily moved to Lawrence, Mississippi. Held various offices, such as master spinner, shoemaker, farmer, rural newspaper editor and writer. In 1912 he traveled to England, where he contacted renownedpoets as Edward Thomas and Lascelles Abercrombie, published there his first two books, a collection of poems and a series of dramatic monologues
Full name is James Mercer Langston Hughes LangstonHughes. He was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, the son of James Nathaniel Hughes and Carrie Langston Hughes. His father abandoned his wife and went to Cuba and then Mexico due to the prevailingracism in the United States. After separation, Hughes began to live with his grandmother, Mary Langston, as his mother, a teacher, moved seeking different jobs. The legends that her grandmother had had amajor impact on Hughes. Through them he discovered the African American oral tradition that made him feel proud of his race.
He spent most of childhood in Lawrence, Kansas, and after the death ofhis grandmother he lived with family friends, James and Mary Reed, for two years. You can see that his childhood was not entirely happy, but this instability influenced greatly in creating the poet...
