Contrast: Use although/though/ even though/in spite of/despite.
Study this example: Last year Jack and Jill spent their holidays by the sea. It rained a lot but they enjoythemselves.
You can say:
a. Although it rained a lot, they enjoyed themselves.
b. Even though it rained a lot, they enjoyed themselves.
c. In spite of the rain, they enjoyed themselves.d. Despite the rain, they enjoyed themselves.
e. The enjoyed themselves though it rained a lot.

Make one sentence from two. Use the connecting word inside the parentheses.

a. I couldn´t sleep. I was tired. (despite)
Despite I was tired, I couldn’tsleep.
b. My uncle has worked hard all his life. He could never save up enough money to go on a long vacation. (in spite of)

In spite of my uncle worked hard all his life, he couldn’t save upenough money to go on long vacation.
c. She spends a lot of money on clothes. They never seem to suit her. (although)
Although she spend a lot of money on clothes, they never seem to suit her.d. We live in the same street. We hardly ever see each other. (despite)

e. I didn´t get the job. I had all necessaryqualifications. (though)
Even though I had all necessary qualifications, I didn’t get the job.

f. He was deeply hurt by her remarks. He said nothing in reply. (even though)
Even though he wasdeeply hurt by her remarks, he said nothing in reply.

g. The salary was very low. She accepted the job. (despite)
Despite the salary was very low, she accepted the job.

h. He has a veryimportant job. He isn´t particularly well-paid. (though)
He isn’t particularly well-paid though he has a very important job.
