THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO

This is a short fiction story of Edgar Allan Poe , it has several elements to discuss, for instance the irony and symbolism , the story take place in Italy around the nineteen century, it begins when Montresor , which is the narrator of the story ,express his resentful against Fortunato and plans to get vengeance on Him 1. We can perceive in the name of Fortunato anirony due to his name express good luck, fortunate, but the author gives at this character a destiny guided for the desires and thoughts of Montresor. Fortunato through the story believes that Montresor is his sincere friend, when actually he has in mind to kill him . Montresor knows perfectly the weakness and pride of Fortunato 2; but he recognizes that Fortunato is an expert in wines.
Othersymbolism is Montresor his name “Mon-tresor” (my treasure) is a metaphor, for Montresor`s noble ancestry is indeed his treasure; it gives us an image of a rich and powerful man. In the story there is other symbolism of Montresor his coat of arms wich is described with three elements the first is a huge human foot d`or he employs the French word or instead of its equivalence in English that is gold thisa symbol of rich and fortune it represents prosperity , the second is a field azure; again the author employs a French word he writes azure instead of blue , maybe this word represents the Azur coast in the Mediterranean wich is frequented for rich people, the third is a serpent rampant , in heraldry standing on its left hind foot with its forepaws in the air symbolizes luxuriant, in Frenchlanguage rampant has a direct relationship with the movement of the serpent in the soil , Montresor was astute like a serpent and Fortunato perceived his poison too late. Furthemore there was a phrase accompanying the coat of arms “nemo me impune lacessit” this maxim adopted as a rule of conduct for Montresor had the meaning of No one attacks me with impunity. Montresor and Fortunato are symbolizetogether in the arms , Fortunato stepping his friend Montresor , the serpent , and Montresor embedded in Fortunato , represented in the foot.
Possibly Montresor belonged to the secret community of the masons and used his knowledge and intelligence tricking to Fortunato , persuading him that he is an indeed friend.
Another important aspect is the dress of Fortunato , he is dressed almost as abuffoon , it was a person employed to tell jokes to the king , the cap of Fortunato had bells , the three bells or points in a buffoon hat represent the donkey`s ears and tail, Poe showed us that fortunate was a fool ,making reference to his cap and his dress.
There is a verbal irony when Montresor smiles in front of Fortunato and this man is thinking is his revenge the end of Fortunato.Montresor thinks at the beginning that he is not going to commit a murder, he thinks himself that fortunate will be immolate, it has a sacred symbolism in the ancient cultures the people used to think that Gods need sacrifice to sustain themselves and their power, maybe montresor thought that he was a kind of god and had the right for punish to Fortunato and for this reason , he was his human sacrifice .The story of the Amontillado is developed in dark places, this story begins in the evening , because the night is accomplice of the impunity ,the carnival suggests a time for sins of the flesh. It refers to “ last indulgences in the pleasures of the flesh” ( Pittman 328) , the carnival gives to montresor the opportunity for the sacrifice of his victim .Fortunato’s sins of the flesh make him avictim of Montresor , The word carnival “ is noticeable to the Italian carne + levare (to put away the flesh )”wich demonstrates symbolic irony of Montresor`s intent for Fortunato (Clendenning 336), Montresor chose this season to put away the flesh desires and maybe his sins, the carnival is not a simply substitution of normal order by chaos , this is the space when the people can change their...
