Hershey’s

Since 2001, major chocolate companies including Hershey have committed abusive child labor.  Hershey’s has announced that its new line of chocolates, Bliss Chocolates, will only be madeusing cocoa certified by the Rainforest Alliance. The only real reason for this move was to prevent the International Labor Rights Forum from exposing an ad featuring Hershey’s use of child labor.Hershey’s holds 42.5% of the U.S. chocolate market,” Currently, west Africa is the region that produces about 70% of the world’s cocoa, reports the AP.
It is estimated about 1.8 million children arebelieved to work on those West African cocoa farms. Approximately 40% of the children, between five to seventeen years old don´t attend school of any kind. According to the ILRF ( internationallabor rights forum), Hershey slave labor makes billions for the company at the expense of these children, only about fifteen percent of whom it estimates are paid at all.
Global activist groups cametogether last year to create the “Raise The Bar” campaign, an initiative made specifically to put pressure on Hershey to stop participating in human abuse. They announced to the company their plan toshow a commercial illustrating Hershey's practice of using child slaves if it didn’t initiate major changes immediately.
Finally this year Hershey declared it will alter its methods, using certifiedFair Trade sources for all of its cocoa by 2020, if it actually goes through with its promise certified cocoa will be verified through independent auditors who will make sure the production alignswith internationally recognized standards for labor, environmental and better farming practices.
