The United States is one of thetwo North American countries. According to an analysis of cultural dimensions developed by Geert Hofstede, the U.S. has one of the highest rates of individualism than any other country estudiado.196 While popular culture in the country is considered as a classless society, 197 several scholars identify significant differences that can be considered as social classes, affecting socialization, language andvalores.198 199 The American working middle class has been the initiator of many contemporary social trends such as modern feminism, environmentalism and multiculturalismo.200 Unlike other cultures, most women work outside the home and have some licenciatura.201 In 2007, 58% of Americans age 18 and over were married, 6% were widowed, 10% divorced and 25% had never casado.202
