Rosie’s garaje
Wher rose espinoza found that gangs had invaded her los angeles barrio. La habla, she realized that the neighborhood’s childres, including her own son, neededa safe, quiet place to do their homework. So in 1991 she set up such a place in her home’s garage.
At first, Espinoza, a medical-equipment designer , did all the tutoring herself. As the number ofstudents seeking refuge from the streets grew, she hired teenage tutors and gave out packages of peanuts and candy to encourage the students to do their homework. According to orange countyneighborhood housing services, recent evaluations showed that students tutored at rosie’s garage increased their writing and math ablity by at least two grade levels.
After nearly two decades, although thegarage’s location has changed, rose espinoza’s methods haven’t. she runs the program much like a school study hall; the students arrive after school, spread out their books on a table, and start theirhomework. Those who have question or need help can ask one of the tutors or Rosa herself, who attends the afterschool sessions whenever she is not at work. In 2003, Espinoza has to move the programfrom her garage after her dog bit a 6-year-olg girs Rosie’s garage is now located in a block of nearby city-owned office that the program is allowed to use for free.
The program has expanded to threeother locations besides L habla and is currently funded by donations and an annual 5-kilomete race. In addition to tutoring, rosie’s garage also sponsors field trips t colleges, museums, and thethearter.
Learning environment. There are, of course, exceptions. Some teachers harm students, some students harm teachers, and some students harm each other.
Fortunately, students are rarely seriouslyharmed at school. In fact, shools are one of the places where children are the safest. So why is the impression that the school is a dangerous place for children so widespread? Part of this...
