CHAPTER 1. 1
THE STUDY OF GEOGRAPHY

1-WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY ?
= the study of the earth, where place, people and things are located and how the are related to each other
2- NAME GEOGRAPHIC TOOLS:
= maps, graphs, charts, gps, satellites, sonars
3-WHAT DOES GEOGRAPHY MEAN?
=it comes from Greek a word meaning writing about or describing
4-HOW DOGEOGRAPHERS USE TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND THE EARTH?
=they use tool to collect information, to analyze and to observe the chances
5-WHAT ARE THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY?
=location, place, region, movement, human environment and interaction, geographic concepts
6- WHAT DOES SONAR STAND FOR?
= SOund and Navigation
7-NAME ONE REMOTE-SENSING TECNOLOGICAL TOOL:
= satellites
8-WHAT IS GPS?
=anetwork of 24 satellites orbiting the earth . Using atomic clocks, the satellite broadcast extremely accurate time measurement, back on earth , GPS units analyze
These signals to provide information about location or any problems on earth
9-NAME SOME OF THE GEOGRAPHIC CONCEPTS
=physical characteristics, patterns of settlement , science and technology ,economic
Activities and cooperation andconflict
10- WHAT DO CONCEPTS DO FOR US?
=help us to recognize and understand geographic pattern and processes that can relate to real-life situations around us
11- NAME ONE EXAMPLE OF PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTIC CONCEPT:
Volacanoes, erosion, earthquakes, have all shaped our world and continue to do so today
12- GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF ECONOMIC ACTIVIES:
=agriculture, industry, and mining , affect bothsociety and environment
13-GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF COOPERATION AND CONFLICT:
= where individual , organizations and countries work together and compete for natural resources
14-THESE ARE FIVE QUESTIONS THAT CAN HELP ORGANIZE INFORMATION ABOUT A PLACE.
* what is the location of a place
*what is the character of a place
* how are places similar and different from other places
* how dopeople, goods, and ideas move between places
* how do people interact with the natural resources of a place

THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

LOCATION
GEOGRAPHERS STUDYING A PLACE USUALLY BEGIN BY FINDING ITS LOCATION.A PLACE LOCATION CAN BE DESCRIBED IN EITHER ABSOLUTE OR RELATIVE TERMS

15- WHAT IS ABSOLUTE LOCATION?
= its position in the globe
16-WHAT IS THE EQUATOR?
= it’s an imaginary linethat circles the globe halfway between the south and the north pole

16-WHAT ARE LINES OF LATITUDE?
=imaginary lines that run parallel to the equator. Measuring distance north or south o the equator
17- WHAT ARE LONGITUDE LINE OR MERIDIANS?
= imaginary lines that run north and south between the two poles
18-what is relative location?
= it’s the relation compared to another place( TORREONIS 9 KM FROM GOMEZ PALACIO)
PLACE
EVERY PLACE ON EARTH HAS FEATURE THAT DISTINGUISH IT FROM OTHER PLACES . ONE CHALLENGE OF GEOGRAPHER IS TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE CHARACTER OF A PLACE IS SIMILAR OR DISTINCT TO ANOTHER THE CHARACTERS OF A PLACE CONSIST OF PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS

19-WHAT ARE PHYSICALCHARACTERISTICS? (read pg 40 physical characteristics)
=unique landforms , ecosystems, and climate
20 – WHAT IS A HUMAN CHARACTERISTIC?
=how people live, work, visit a place, their languages, customs and beliefs. How their economy works. How they are governed
REGIONS
A REGION IS A GROUP OF PLACES WITH AT LEAST ONE COMMONCHARACTERISTIC. SOMETIMES REGIONS ARE DETERMINED BY PEOPLES PERCEPTIONS.

21- WHAT´S PERCEPTION?
=a point of view that influenced by one’s own culture and experience

22- WHAT KIND OF REGIONS CAN THERE BE?
= formal , functional and perceptual
23- WHAT IS A FORMAL REGION ?
= areas in which certain characteristic are found throughout the area: ex: cities, states, countries are all political regions...
