GERUNDS AND INFINITIVES
VERBS FOLLOWED BY THE GERUND (-ING FORM):
appreciate dislike keep on practise
avoid enjoy look forward to put off
can’t help feel like mention risk
can’tstand finish mind suggest
consider give up be/get used to deny
be worth imagine object to admit
v. g. : I can’t stand waiting in queues. I miss living abroad.
Weconsidered buying a house in the country, but we enjoy being in the town too much.

VERBS FOLLOWED BY TO INFINITIVE:
afford forget manage promise
appear happen mean refuse
arrange hopeoffer seem
decide intend plan threaten
fail learn prepare used
v.g.: We can’t afford to have a holiday this year.
We decided to get married.
I managed to find anotherglass to replace the one I broke.

VERBS + DIRECT OBJECT + TO INFINITIVE:
advise force persuade tell
allow invite remind warn
encourage order teach
v.g.: He advised me to take theexam.
They persuaded me to stay for a few days.
VERBS + EITHER TO-INFINITIVE OR OBJECT + TO INF:
ask hate like prefer
beg help love want
expect intend mean wish
v.g.: I asked to leave the room. He asked me to leave the room.
I want to go to the seaside but my husband wants me to go to the mountains.




VERBS + DIRECT OBJECT + INFINITIVE WITHOUTTO:
feel let dare(+to inf)
hear make need(+to inf)
see help had better
v.g.: He let me borrow his car.
He made her tell him the truth.
* With verbs of sensation: feel,hear, see, watch... they can be followed by the -ing form to express hearing or seeing only part of an action
I heard him sing Figaro / I heard him singing in the bath.

VERBS + EITHER THE-ING FORM OR THE INFINITIVE:
1- begin, start, continue...:
He continued working / to work after everybody else had left the office.
I began studying / to study in 1984.
