• Gerunds and infinitives are forms of verbs that act like nouns.
• They can follow adjectives and other verbs but gerunds can also follow prepositions. E.g. He was found guilty of lying incourt.
• A gerund or the –ing form, is a noun formed from a verb and adding ing. But, not all words formed with -ing are gerunds.

THE (SIMPLE & PERFECT) ING FORM:
• Simple: refers to the present or future. E.g. swimming is an energetic form ofexercise.
• Perfect: Shows that the action of the ing form happened before the action of the verb. E.g. He denied having lied to his parents.
NOTE: “We can use the simple ing form instead ofthe perfect ing form with no difference in meaning” E.g. He admitted to having stolen/ stealing the car.

THE ING FORM IS ALSO USED:
• After certain verbs: acknowledge, admit, adore,anticipate, appreciate, avoid, celebrate, confess, consider, continue, contemplate, delay, deny, describe, detest, discuss, dislike, dread, endure, enjoy, escape, excuse, fancy, finish, forgive, go(foractivities), imagine, involve, keep(=continue), justify, mention, mind, miss, omit, postpone, practice, prevent, quit, recall, recollect, recommend, regret, report, resent, resist, resume, risk, save,stand, suggest, tolerate, understand, etc. E.g. I adore reading your books, They anticipated winning the election, I quit smoking, He avoided answering my question.
• After: Dislike, enjoy,hate, like, love, prefer to express general preference. E.g. He loves singing.
• After: spend, waste, and lose (time, money, etc) E.g. She lost U.S 500 investing in unsuccessful companies....
