In 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved by the United Nations General Assembly, this declaration recognizes the right of each person to life and it clearly states “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” (Article 5).
In 2011 there is still a lot of countries that hold thedeath penalty. During the last decade as Amnesty International reports more than a third has drop off the death penalty, reducing the number the countries that carried out executions in 20 out of 198 countries in 2011. From the totality of the countries we find that 140 of 198 are considered abolitionist in law or practice and 58 are classified as retentionist countries.

Even though the countriesthat continued to use the death penalty, some progress was made in 2011.
In USA, Illinois abolish the death penalty in 2011 and Connecticut became the 17th state to formal repeal capital punishment in 2012, as OHCHR inform. China removed the death penalty for 13 crimes meanwhile add two new capital crimes. In Japan for the first time in 10 years were no executions recorded.

As AmnestyInternational reports, in 2011 at least 18.750 people remained under sentence of death while 680 people were executed worldwide, excluding China were thousands of people are believed to have been executed. In 2011 the executions were higher than in 2010 were 527 died by capital punishment.
The countries that had a highest rate of executions in 2011 were: China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and USA.Amnesty International has made a report in 2011 which the data of the executions in 2011, although they emphasize that the true figures are significantly higher. (Where “+” is indicated after a number means that is a minimum figure and when the “+” is not preceded by number indicates that had been executions but data was not possible to obtain.)
China (1000s), Iran (360+), Saudi Arabia (82+), Iraq(68+), USA (43), Yemen (41+), North Korea (30+), Malaysia (+),Syria (+), Somalia (10: 6 by the Transitional Federal Government; 3 in Puntland; 1 in Galmudug), Sudan (7+), Viet Nam (5+), Bangladesh (5+), Taiwan (5), South Sudan (5), Palestinian Authority (3 in Gaza), Belarus (2), Afghanistan (2), Egypt (1+), United Arab Emirates (1).

While analysing the death penalty for continents , it isimportant to underline that Asia is the continent that nearly comprises the total number of executions in the world. America could be a continent free of capital punishment if it would not be for USA. In Africa the death penalty is followed by three countries and in Europe, Belorussia constitute the only exception of a continent totally free of death penalty.
The executions methods that were used in 2011were: beheading, hanging, shooting and lethal injection. Public executions were still carried in Iran, North Korea Saudi Arabia and Somalia.

All other European countries have abolished the death penalty in allcircumstances. The last one to change his status has been Latvia that since 2011 is not anymore condemning to death penalty for crimes during wartime.

In Belorussia, the criminal code states that the death penalty may be imposed in cases of severe crimes connected with the deliberate deprivation of life with aggravating circumstances. The death penalty is applicable to 12 crimes in peacetime and twoadditional crimes in times of war.
The death penalty is carried out by firing squad. Relatives are reportedly not informed about the date and/or place of execution. The bodies of those executed are reportedly not returned to families, nor is their place of burial disclosed as states the OSCE.
