Idioms and Phrasal Verbs forms part of the Oxford Word Skills vocabulary series, which helps students learn, practise andrevise everyday English words and phrases. These activities introduce students to the concept of informal written messages, and give them opportunities to practise useful idioms and phrasal verbs in this context.

Aim: 1.to present and practise vocabulary for informal written messages
2. to encourage communication and practise pronunciation of the key vocabulary.

Preparation:
n

You will need a copy of the following for each student: Activity worksheet: Informal written messages (from Idioms and Phrasal Verbs Intermediate page 48)

n

You will need a copy of the following worksheet for each pair/group ofstudents, cut up into cards: Activity worksheet: Vocabulary matching cards

1. LEAD-IN
n

Ask students for examples of situations, either true or imaginary, when they were unable to do something they had planned to, e.g. go to the cinema with a friend. What were their reasons? How did they think their friend would feel? What could they do about it?

2. LIstENINg ActIvIty
n

Tell thestudents you are going to read them a short note. At the end, they will have to tell you what Claire had planned to do, why she couldn’t do it, and what she suggested instead. Read them Claire’s message at the top of the worksheet. Elicit answers from the whole class. Read it again if necessary. answers: claire was supposed to have lunch with anne, but she had to go to an important meeting instead.She suggested meeting the following day for lunch instead.

Hand out Activity worksheet: Informal written messages. Ask students to read Claire’s message and the accompanying glossary, and answer any questions they might have.

3. READINg ActIvIty
n

Ask the students to read the note from Stuart and the accompanying glossary, including the Spotlight text. Why has Stuart written thenote? (to ask Carlos to put the rubbish out, and to tell him that Joanne rang about dinner tomorrow) What does he want Carlos to do? (put the rubbish out) In pairs, ask the students to compare the two notes. What is different about them? What do they have in common? Example answers: Stuart’s note gives information and makes a request, while claire’s note is about changing plans and apologizing. bothnotes are informal and use idioms and phrasal verbs.

Tell students to turn over their worksheets. Hand out the vocabulary and definition cards to each pair or group. Which group can match the idioms and phrasal verbs with the definitions first? Elicit answers from the whole class and make sure that allgroups have matched the words and definitions correctly.

5. REvIEW ActIvIty
n

Ask the students to complete the gap fill activity on the worksheet, then check with their partner that their answers are correct.
